Description:
Description One of the Czech railways flagship trains are their Pendolino trains. They are the only electric trains equipped with tilting technology in the esk drhy fleet. Czech Pendolino trains are used for their premium express train service called SuperCity, similar to the Express Intercity Premium in Poland. To verify whether the tilting system would be suitable for the Czech Republic, a number of tests were carried out, first with an Italian ETR 401 prototype and then with an ETR 470 prototype. After a few years, esk drhy launched a tender, which was won by the Czech company KD, which was supposed to produce 10 tilting trains. The company went bankrupt shortly after winning the contract, and the production was taken over by Fiat Ferroviaria, which, due to the high costs for the Czech railways, had to produce only seven trains. So in 2003, the first unit entered service. Over the years, it became clear that the tilting trains were a constant loss for esk drhy and were not profitable. The main reason was that the routes they travelled were already existing and very short. Over the following years, the Czech railways tried to extend the connections across the border, reaching Vienna and Bratislava until 2012. There were also plans for a Vienna-Berlin train via Prague, which never entered service.Today, esk drhys Pendolino trains mainly serve the Ostrava-Prague route, as shown in the photo, where the 680 number 003 crosses the viaduct over the Moravsk Szava River in the municipality of Zbeh. From September 2025, the Pendolino trains will also run between Prague and esk Budjovice, and from December, trains should resume between Prague and ilina/Koice, which were suspended in order to equip the trains with ETCS.Information Date 14.08.2025, 1548Place Zbeh, Czech RepublicTrain 680 003Train Company esk drhyLine SC 506Start Ostrava hl.n.Destination Praha hl.nThe photo was taken and edited by Nathan Urriani.
